Welcome to the website which chronicles the history of the Goddard Family of Dorset and Hampshire. The earliest ancestor that I have traced to date is Samuel Goddard. He was born in 1755 and lived most of his life at Bothenhampton in Dorset.
An early version of this History was written by my grandfather, John Edward Goddard between 1907 and 1912. My father Joseph Bedloe Goddard substantially added to that between 1953 and 1954. Both he and his brother,Edward Bryer Goddard, did much additional research at that time.
Detailed below is a summary family tree of the main lineage and a complete family tree is available here.
Samuel Goddard | Landowner of Bothenhampton, Dorset | 1755 – 1820 |
John Goddard | Surgeon & Apothecary of Christchurch, Hampshire | 1789 – 1837 |
John Bryer Goddard | Surgeon & Apothecary of Christchurch, Hampshire | 1811 – 1880 |
John Bedloe Goddard | HMB Consular Service & Artist of Christchurch, Hampshire | 1838 – 1896 |
John Edward Goddard | Solicitors Clerk born Tientsin, China | 1866 – 1933 |
Edward Bryer Goddard | Banker of Bournemouth, Dorset | 1897 – 1980 |
My initial interest in my family’s history centred upon the three siblings who were artists and who left tangible legacies in the form of paintings. My father had many works by John Bedloe Goddard and two by Eliza, his sister. My understanding is that my grandfather, John Edward Goddard, owned many paintings by both artists that had been passed down to him presumably by the artists themselves. When my grandmother,Alice, died in 1952 the estate including the paintings was divided up between her two sons, Edward Bryer Goddard and Joseph Bedloe Goddard.
I started my research in 1993 concentrating on the artists, John Bedloe, Eliza and Amelia, the children of John Bryer and Eliza Goddard. I thought that through their art they would be traceable both in their activities and through discovering long forgotten works. Inevitably, this led me into research in a wider field and so there have been many new discoveries about other family members too. Despite my endeavours, I have been as unsuccessful as John Edward Goddard and others in discovering where Samuel was born although I have found new information about him.
